This is the kind of written verdict we send back within five working days. The venue and its account are invented, but the checks are the real ones, using the published 2026 PPL and PRS tariffs.
The Example Arms · pub with diningSample verdict
In short
Two things on the bill don't match how the pub runs. Fixing both would reduce the PRS charge from the date the change is reported. Everything else is right.
- PPL background music (whole premises)On the account: 380m² audible areaMatches the floor plan. Kitchen and cellar correctly excluded.Correct
- PRS bar area (Tariff P)On the account: 140m²The serving area behind the bar has been included. Measured without it, the bar is about 112m², which is under the 121m² step for the higher band.Needs fixing
- PRS dining room (Tariff HR)On the account: 1 room, 52 seatsMatches the seating plan. Check again if the private dining room starts playing music.Correct
- First-year higher rateOn the account: Standard + 50% on the PRS lineThe licence started in 2024. The higher rate should only apply to the first year, so it shouldn't still be on a 2026 invoice.Needs fixing
- Live music sessionsOn the account: 1 session a week, 150 capacityYou told us live music is now monthly. Worth updating, with dates as evidence.Worth updating
What happens next
- You can report both changes to PPL PRS yourself. We tell you exactly what to say and what evidence to attach.
- Or we handle it for you, with your written authority, and confirm the new figures in writing.
- A reduction usually applies from the date the change is reported. Earlier years aren't automatically refundable, which is why it's worth checking before the next renewal.
