We're an independent consultancy, not PPL PRS. We'll listen properly, explain what it means in plain English and help you work out the sensible next step. Sometimes that's paying. Sometimes it isn't. Either way you'll know why.

What to do today

A worrying letter makes everything feel urgent. Most of these take five minutes and put you back in control.

  1. 1Keep everything: the letter, the envelope or email, and a note of any calls with the date, time and name.
  2. 2Find the deadline, if there is one. Don't miss it, but don't agree to figures you haven't checked either.
  3. 3Write down how music is really used at the premises: radio, TV, streaming, a music service, live or DJ nights, hold music, or none.
  4. 4Note anything that has changed: closing, selling, fewer seats or rooms, stopping music. Changes are usually only credited from the date you report them.
  5. 5Reply in writing rather than on the phone, so there's a record. There are free letters further down this page.
  6. 6Don't give card or bank details on a call you didn't expect.
  7. 7If you have court papers, not just letters, get legal advice today. Court forms have strict time limits.

Free letters you can send today

Calm, factual letters get better answers than angry ones, and a written record protects you. Copy one, fill in the brackets and send it from your business email. They're free, and you don't need to tell us you used them.

How we help, and what it costs

We're a business, so some of what we do is paid. We'll always tell you the price first, and we'll only suggest paid help when it's likely to be worth more to you than it costs.

We'll say no when we're not the right help: if you've had court papers you need a solicitor, and if the bill is right we'll tell you so rather than invent a problem.

Common questions

Are you PPL PRS?

No. Music Licence Consulting is an independent consultancy. We're not part of, or paid by, PPL PRS, PPL or PRS for Music. We help businesses understand and check what they're being asked for.

Is it free to tell you what happened?

Yes. Reading your message, replying and a 20-minute call are free, with no obligation. If a paid check would genuinely help, we'll say what it costs before you decide. If you don't need us, we'll tell you that too.

How quickly will someone reply?

A real person reads every message and replies within 72 hours. If your letter has a deadline in the next three working days, say so and we'll look at yours first.

Can you make PPL PRS cancel my invoice?

No one honest can promise that. What we can do is check whether the charge matches the published tariff and how your premises really use music, explain your options, and help you put the right facts to PPL PRS in writing.

Do I have to have a music licence at all?

If you play recorded music, radio or TV where staff or customers can hear it, you'll usually need permission from the rights holders, which for most businesses means TheMusicLicence. If you genuinely play no music, you don't. Our free checker walks through the common cases.
